Collections Spotlight
Since its founding in 1970, the South Dakota Art Museum has been a place where art, people and ideas intersect. Over time, through the generosity of donors, the museum has built a collection of nearly 7,000 works of art, a living and evolving record of creative expression in and beyond South Dakota.
"Collections Spotlight" zeroes in on individual works within this growing collection, introducing visitors to art created by artists with ties to South Dakota. Their varied perspectives reflect the state鈥檚 rich cultural landscape, from the voices of O膷h茅thi 艩ak贸wi艐 citizens to the innovations of university art faculty, emerging artists and nationally recognized figures. Some, like Oscar Howe, Rita Tate and Mary Groth, chose to remain rooted in the region. Others, such as Harvey Dunn, Karen York and Craig Carver moved farther afield yet remain connected through subject matter, artistic influence or family ties. Together, these works highlight the creative energy that thrives both within and beyond the state鈥檚 borders.
