This photograph pictures a group of school children in parade-like formation carrying flags and wearing similarly styled hats. This group of children is commemorating the American soldiers that were going to be deployed in Europe during World War I. This picture was taken on May 17, 1918 and captured the Brookings School’s patriotic outdoor drills. This is just a week and a half before the Battle of Cantigny, America’s first military engagement of the war, where 1,603 young men would give their lives for their country.
