About the Animal Science Department
Greetings from the Department of Animal Science at South Dakota State University! We are proud to be part of a land-grant institution, and our department is deeply committed to the three core missions of a land-grant university: learning, discovery and engagement. Notably, SDSU is home to the first undergraduate Animal Science program accredited by the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS), a distinction that reflects our long-standing commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement.
Our award-winning faculty, meat counter, and livestock teaching units provide hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for successful careers in the animal and meat industries, veterinary medicine, academia and a wide range of agricultural professions. Beyond the classroom, students can enhance their experience through numerous extracurricular opportunities, including judging teams, the rodeo program, and a variety of student clubs. Among these is the Little “I,” which celebrated its 100th year in 2023 and is the largest student-run event of its kind in the United States.
Our undergraduate curriculum is also designed to prepare students for advanced study through our highly successful graduate programs. This is reflected in the accomplishments of our Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy students. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to participate in applied and basic research, with results that directly benefit the people of South Dakota and the Upper Great Plains.
An extensive network of Extension specialists and field specialists plays a critical role in sharing research-based knowledge with stakeholders across the state. These professionals also help identify emerging challenges faced by producers, guiding research and outreach efforts within the department and the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. Their work provides invaluable service and education to the people of South Dakota.
I invite you to explore the Department of Animal Science website, reach out to me or any of our faculty members with questions, and consider scheduling a visit. We look forward to the opportunity for SDSU to be the place you call home as you pursue a hands-on education and your academic degree in Animal Science.
