Brittany Kjerstad McKnight
Assistant Professor of Business Law
Biography
Brittany Kjerstad McKnight is an assistant professor of business law at South Dakota State University’s Ness School of Management and Economics. She teaches courses in business law and real estate, where her work focuses on the intersection of legal doctrine, property rights and real-world business decision-making.
McKnight earned her B.A. in English, magna cum laude, from South Dakota State University and her Juris Doctor from the University of South Dakota School of Law. She is licensed to practice law in South Dakota in both state and federal court. Prior to entering academia, she practiced law in a variety of roles, including founding and operating her own law firm, serving as corporate counsel, and working as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. This professional background informs her teaching and allows her to bring practical, experience-based perspectives into the classroom.
In addition to her teaching and scholarship, McKnight has played a significant leadership role within the Ness School. She served as the accreditation project manager for the school’s successful AACSB accreditation, coordinating across faculty and administration to meet rigorous academic and institutional standards. She also serves as the faculty adviser for the Women in Business student organization, where she mentors students and supports programming focused on professional development and leadership.
McKnight’s scholarship centers on property law, real estate and emerging legal issues at the intersection of law, technology and markets. Her work has been published in national law journals, including publications with the American Bar Association, and reflects her broader interest in how legal frameworks adapt to evolving economic and technological realities.
