Biography

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Bradley Snyder joined the faculty of South Dakota State University as Instructor of Low Brass in fall 2022. At SDSU, Dr. Snyder teaches applied trombone, euphonium and tuba lessons, as well as courses in music appreciation, brass pedagogy for music education majors, and music technology. Prior to joining the faculty at SDSU, Snyder served as the bass trombonist of the Ocala Symphony Orchestra for four seasons.
A versatile musician Dr. Snyder has performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Grand Opera, the Southwest Florida Symphony, the Coastal Symphony of Georgia, the Northwest Florida Ballet, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Brass Quintet, the Houston Brass Band, the Houston Jazz Orchestra, the Balcony Big Band, the Fellowship Jazz Center Orchestra, and was a founding member of the Big Bend Brass.

As a soloist, Dr. Snyder has appeared with the SDSU Wind Symphony, SDSU Concert Band and SDSU Jazz Ensemble 1. Additionally, Snyder was named a finalist in the 2017 Donald Yaxley Solo Bass Trombone Competition sponsored by the International Trombone Association.

In January 2024, Dr. Snyder was invited as a member of jazz ensemble from the United States to travel to Santiago de Cuba, Cuba to perform at the Jazz Plaza International Jazz Festival. During this trip, the group performed several concerts as well as leading master classes and workshops with students at the local conservatory. This was the third time that Dr. Snyder was involved in a musical and cultural exchange with the students and professionals in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.

Outside of performing, Dr. Snyder works to contribute new works to the low brass repertoire. Upcoming projects include the world premier of Robert Traugh’s Badlands for bass trombone and electronics in Fall 2025. Additionally, he has been involved in the commissioning of works by composers Nicolo Ferro and Joy Zickau. Dr. Snyder is also an active arranger for various low brass ensemble configurations. His arrangements have been performed at the Cleveland Trombone Seminar, the International Trombone Festival, and at universities around the country. His arrangements are published exclusively through IMBrassworks.

Dr. Snyder received his Doctor of Music from Florida State University, a Master of Music from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music from Pennsylvania State University. His primary teachers include Dr. John Drew, Allen Barnhill, Mark Lusk, Robert Matchett III and Bruce Lazier. Dr. Snyder is a performing artist for the S-Mute.
